Iodinated intravenous (IV) contrast agents — used in computed tomography (CT) and other imaging modalities — have been blamed for worsening renal function in some patients. The impression that currently used iodinated contrast agents often cause or exacerbate renal dysfunction requires us to negotiate frequently with radiologists, trying to make the case that the benefits of a contrast-enhanced study outweigh the perceived harms. Now, as part of a series “Things We Do for No Reason,” writers have provided a brief but compelling overview of this topic — showing that risks associated with contemporary IV contrast have been overstated, possibly to the detriment of patient care (J Hosp Med 2025 Apr 21; [e-pub]).
