Tinea versicolor (or more properly, pityriasis versicolor) is caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur. The efficacy of oral ketoconazole for this condition is well established. A shampoo formulation could cover large areas and provide a safe alternative to oral therapy. To evaluate ketoconazole shampoo, a manufacturer-sponsored study randomized 322 patients to one of three regimens: ketoconazole 2% shampoo once daily for 3 days, ketoconazole shampoo for 1 day followed by placebo shampoo for 2 days, or placebo shampoo for 3 days.
Once each day, patients applied the shampoo to dampened affected areas, lathered the shampoo, left it in for 5 minutes, and then rinsed. At evaluation after 31 days, clinical response rates were 5% in the placebo group…
