Use of fillers for cosmetic enhancement has become increasingly popular in the U.S., but bargain seekers should beware of unprincipled charlatans. The CDC has reported the cases of three patients who underwent buttock enhancement on December 22, 2007, with a liquid silicone oil and saline mixture at a facility staffed by a radiology technician without any physician supervision or affiliation. The volumes injected were 400 mL, 800 mL, and an unknown amount. Within 1 hour of injection, all three patients developed headache, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, and burgundy-colored urine.
