The Kleihauer-Betke test (KBT) detects fetal red cells in the maternal circulation. The test traditionally has been used after maternal trauma to detect fetomaternal hemorrhage in Rh-negative mothers so that Rh-immune globulin can be administered promptly to prevent alloimmunization. To determine whether KBT results predict preterm labor after maternal trauma, researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 93 pregnant trauma patients (Rh-negative or Rh-positive) who underwent cardiotocographic monitoring at a single trauma center from 1996 to 2002.
