A primary goal of therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is prompt and effective symptom relief. Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most effective treatment for achieving this endpoint. Some results (presented as abstracts only) suggest that lansoprazole provides more effective, more rapid symptom relief than omeprazole in patients with symptomatic GERD. To compare heartburn relief provided by these 2 PPIs, researchers in this double-blind, multicenter study randomized 3510 symptomatic GERD patients with confirmed erosive esophagitis to receive lansoprazole (30 mg daily) or omeprazole (20 mg daily) for 8 weeks.
