Acne vulgaris is a frustrating condition for many adolescents. Ultraviolet light is reportedly beneficial for acne, perhaps through a phototoxic effect on bacteria. The pulsed-dye laser is used to treat both vascular and inflammatory skin conditions, raising the question of its use in treating facial acne. In this single-blind, controlled, split-face study, researchers randomized 38 patients (age range, 13 to 31 years) to receive either one or two pulsed-dye laser treatments 2 weeks apart on one half of the face. A Leeds acne severity score of >2 out of 12 was required for entry into the study.
