Linezolid (Zyvox) is an oxazolidinone antibiotic with a chemical structure similar to that of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor, toloxatone. Concomitant use of linezolid and medications that increase serotonin concentrations might pose a risk for serotonin syndrome. These authors reviewed data from the FDA’s Adverse Effects Reporting System to identify cases of serotonin syndrome associated with linezolid use.
Serotonin toxicity was defined according to the modified Hunter Serotonin Toxicity Criteria (clonus, seizure, myoclonus, ataxia, incoordination, jaw-trismus, rigidity, shivering, rigors, or nystagmus; tremor or twitching and hyperreflexia).
