Anecdotally, many colonoscopists use magnesium citrate as part of a bowel preparation regimen or as a rescue method when a patient does not tolerate standard preparation. However, data on magnesium citrate as a bowel preparation for colonoscopy are scant, probably because no pharmaceutical company has shown substantial interest in its development. Now, new evidence from Korea supports the use of magnesium citrate for bowel preparation.
