Low magnesium levels have been found in women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This double-blind, controlled trial from Italy suggests that magnesium replacement may decrease symptoms of PMS.
The 32 participants (mean age, 33 years) had confirmed PMS and no concurrent medical or psychiatric illness. All had experienced PMS symptoms for at least 3 years that frequently affected social and work functioning.The women were randomized to receive either 360 mg of oral magnesium or placebo for two menstrual cycles, taken daily from the 15th day of the menstrual cycle until the onset of menstrual flow.
