Psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy remains an effective and, if used carefully, safe treatment for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. However, a follow-up study of PUVA-treated patients with psoriasis has revealed a dose-dependent increase in skin cancer, with the development of squamous cell carcinoma and, to a lesser extent, basal cell carcinoma. A high number of treatments (>200) has been associated, in some patients, with squamous cell metastasis and death.
