Benign thyroid nodules are treated if they cause compressive symptoms, or if they secrete excess thyroid hormone (toxic nodule). Treatment is typically surgical resection, but less-invasive methods are increasingly sought.
In this retrospective study, 1500 patients (including 200 with a toxic thyroid nodule) who had received percutaneous laser ablation for benign thyroid nodules were followed for up to 10 years.
Nodule volume decreased by ≥50% in all patients, and median reduction in volume was 70% at 1 year.
80%–90% of patients had improvement in compressive symptoms or cosmetic effects.
Most patients with toxic nodules were able to reduce the dose of methimazole or stop it altogether.
