It has been suggested that Down syndrome might be more prevalent among infants of diabetic mothers (see Arch Dis Child 1997; 77:242). These researchers used data from the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations, a hospital-based, case-control study and surveillance system, to look for such an association. They identified 2022 infants with Down syndrome, 11 of whom had mothers with diabetes. The relation between Down syndrome and maternal diabetes mellitus, including maternal gestational diabetes and types I and II diabetes, was evaluated, controlling for maternal age in a pair-matched multivariant analysis with logistic regression.
