Tubal sterilization is the most common form of contraception practiced in the U.S. Although the operation is intended to impose a simple mechanical barrier so that the sperm and oocyte do not unite, inconsistent reports of menstrual changes, decreased rates of ovarian malignancies, and other findings suggest that the procedure affects the ovaries and ovarian hormones. In this study of 516 premenopausal college alumnae (ages, 40 to 44) who had been pregnant at least once, perimenopausal and menstrual symptoms were compared in women who had been sterilized (11 percent) and those who had not (89 percent).
