In 2013, four national societies published comprehensive guidelines on antibiotic prophylaxis in surgery that addressed antibiotic selection, timing, and dosing. Yet since then, the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) has remained relatively static. Now, using several surgical registries, researchers have examined the association between noncompliance with these guidelines and risk of SSI among 119,000 adults undergoing noncardiac surgery at 37 U.S. institutions between 2014 and 2022 ().
