When children are allergic to eggs, clinicians may be reluctant to administer vaccines that contain egg proteins. Currently, skin testing is recommended before MMR immunization of children with a history of systemic anaphylactic reactions, and "desensitization" with five diluted MMR injections is recommended for children with positive skin tests. To assess whether this approach is really necessary, investigators gave a standard dose of MMR vaccine to 54 children with a positive skin test to egg and a past history of life-threatening anaphylaxis, urticaria, wheezing, GI symptoms, or laryngeal edema (many also had positive food challenges).
