The monkeypox outbreak in the U.S. currently appears to be most prevalent among men who have sex with men — but just as with HIV/AIDS, monkeypox will probably spread beyond this group. Transmission is thought to occur primarily through close person-to-person contact. To elucidate other potential sources of infection, the CDC examined a dwelling in Dallas, Texas, that had been occupied by a traveler from Lagos, Nigeria, who may have been the index U.S. monkeypox case.
