Most studies of ventricular arrhythmias after MI have focused on ventricular fibrillation during the early phase (within 48 hours) and on sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) in the subacute and chronic phases of MI. The present study from Barcelona examined the predisposing factors and prognosis of sustained monomorphic VT, an uncommon arrhythmia, in the first 48 hours after MI.
Sustained VT (lasting longer than 30 seconds or resulting in hemodynamic collapse) occurred in 21 of 1120 patients (1.9 percent) within 48 hours of presentation with acute MI.
