In 1493, Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawing "The Copulation" depicted what was thought to be the anatomy of sexual intercourse. R.L. Dickinson modified da Vinci's conclusions in 1933, as did Masters and Johnson in the 1960s. These Dutch authors wondered whether taking MRI images during sex is feasible and, secondarily, whether these prior assumptions about sexual anatomy are correct.
An observational study assessed MRI of sexual intercourse in 8 couples and sexual arousal through self-stimulation in 3 women. Two men were able to sustain erections during the experiment only after ingesting sildenafil 1 hour before imaging. The authors show that MRI during sex is feasible.
