Can magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) be conducted safely very soon after stent implantation? To find out, researchers in England analyzed in-hospital and 9-month outcome data from 49 patients (mean age, 64) who had been enrolled in a clinical study of myocardial necrosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). All underwent cardiovascular MRI before and 1 to 3 days after PCI with stenting (mean number of stents per patient, 2.2); 45% had multivessel disease. All patients received aspirin and clopidogrel. Drug-eluting stents (DES) were used in 15 patients (31%), of whom 14 received paclitaxel stents.
