Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections have been described in a variety of populations. To determine the presentation and management of this infection in pregnant women, investigators reviewed the charts of 57 women in whom MRSA infections were diagnosed at a Dallas hospital during a 4.5-year period.
The incidence of MRSA infection in pregnant women appeared to be increasing; only two cases were seen in all of 2000, but 17 were seen in the first half of 2004. Thirteen percent of the infected women were HIV-positive, 11% had asthma, and 9% had diabetes.
