New York City has become the first large U.S. city to ban tobacco sales to people under age 21. Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation raising the age requirement from 18 to 21 on Tuesday.
The city's health commissioner told the Associated Press that the law should make it more inconvenient for teens to start smoking.
The mayor also signed legislation banning coupons for tobacco and set the minimum price of a pack of cigarettes to $10.50.
