New data from Utah further implicate THC vaping products — and in particular, THC products containing vitamin E acetate — in the current outbreak of vaping-associated lung injury. The findings are presented in MMWR.
Roughly 50 people who developed lung injury after vaping provided information about their product use. Of these, 92% reported using THC-containing products in the prior 3 months. This rate is higher than what's been reported in previous national and state-specific studies, and non-medicinal THC is not legal in Utah. Dank Vapes, Rove, and Golden Gorilla were the most common brands of cartridges containing THC.
Roughly 89% of 20 THC cartridges from six patients were found to contain vitamin E acetate, a common diluent.
