Homicide is one of the leading causes of death among 10 to 24 year olds. Analysis of National Vital Statistics System data from 1981 to 2010 for this age group indicates that homicide rates rose dramatically (83%) from 1985 to 1993, then fell by 41% from 1994 to 1999. Since then, rates have declined only about 1% annually. Since 1985, 80% of homicides involved firearms. Males, aged 20 to 24 years, and blacks had the highest homicide rates. From 2000 to 2010, homicide rates among blacks declined significantly slower than rates for other racial/ethnic groups except whites.
