Although the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Clinical Practice Guidelines represent the standard of care for treatment of ovarian cancer, these guidelines have not been carefully evaluated with respect to disease outcomes. Investigators sought to assess whether adherence to NCCN guidelines is associated with better survival and to identify predictors of such adherence. State of California registry data were used to identify cases of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer reported from 1999 through 2006.
Of 13,321 women (median age at diagnosis, 61; 70% stage III–IV disease; 42% serous tumors), 81% underwent surgery at low-volume hospitals (<20 annual cases) and 62% were cared for by low-volume healthcare providers (<10 annual cases)…
