The optimal time to start oral intake after cesarean delivery is unknown. Taiwanese investigators conducted a review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of timing of first oral intake after cesarean birth on recovery of gastrointestinal (GI) function. Seventeen studies (14 of which were randomized, controlled trials [RCTs]) involving 2966 women in 10 countries were analyzed. Six studies used regional anesthesia only, 4 used general anesthesia, and 7 used both methods. In 11 studies, water and clear liquids were offered within 6 to 8 hours after delivery; in 4 studies, solid food was offered as early as 6 hours postoperatively. Delayed oral intake ranged from 8 to 48 hours.
