To qualify for electronic health record (EHR) incentive payments from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), physicians must adopt at least a basic EHR and meet 15 “meaningful use” criteria. To evaluate adoption of EHRs, researchers conducted a national survey of 1820 primary care providers (PCPs) and specialists who were practicing in office-based settings in 2011 and 2012 (response rate, 60%).
Approximately equal proportions of PCPs and specialists reported using basic EHRs (43%); physicians in larger groups and in larger physician organizations were more likely to have adopted EHRs.
