Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by esophageal dysfunction (mainly dysphagia and food impaction) and eosinophil-predominant inflammation (usually ≥15 eosinophils per high-power field). EoE is currently considered the second-leading cause of chronic esophagitis and the leading cause of food impaction in young patients. Clinical implementation of consensus recommendations from 2007 and 2011 has been hampered by heterogeneous symptom presentations and disagreement on diagnosis and clinical endpoints for therapy.
