The effects of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection on the course of treated AIDS patients in resource-poor countries remains poorly understood. In a recent retrospective study, researchers assessed CMV DNA levels in stored blood samples from 293 HIV-infected patients in Thailand who initiated or resumed ART between 1996 and 2010 at CD4 counts <200 cells/mm3.
Fifty-four percent of the patients were male, the median age was 33, the median baseline CD4 count was 82 cells/mm3, and the median HIV RNA level was 4.9 log copies/mL.
