Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is most efficiently transmitted percutaneously. However, outbreaks of HCV infection transmitted by sexual contact have recently been reported among men who have sex with men (MSM) — primarily those with HIV infection.
To determine the long-term dynamics of and risk factors for HCV transmission in HIV-infected and -uninfected MSM, researchers conducted a prospective cohort analysis. The Multicenter AIDS Cohort, established in 1984 in four U.S. metropolitan areas, enrolled MSM with or at risk for HIV infection. The current study involved 5310 participants who tested negative for HCV antibody within 2 years of enrollment and underwent HCV testing at least once more before September 30, 2011.
