Because most case series of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) have not been population-based, the incidence of DILI is unclear. In this population-based study from Iceland, researchers used various means to capture all cases that occurred in 2010 and 2011 among the country's 250,000 inhabitants (age, ≥15).
Ninety-six cases of DILI were identified; annual incidence was 19 per 100,000 people. Median values for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin were 312 U/L, 204 U/L, 209 U/L, and 1.8 mg/dL, respectively. Twenty-two patients were hospitalized because of DILI, and 17 developed DILI while hospitalized for other conditions. One patient died.
