The primary eradication rate for Helicobacter pylori infection continues to decrease because of increasing drug resistance. Now, investigators have tested the efficacy of a new, complex treatment regimen comprising selected antibiotics and doses considered likely to overcome drug resistance in conjunction with a proton-pump inhibitor.
In this open-label, pilot study in Colombia, 118 patients with H. pylori infection (documented by endoscopic biopsies for histology and urease testing) received a 15-day regimen that included 5 days of lansoprazole (30 mg twice daily), amoxicillin (1 g twice daily) and metronidazole (500 mg 3 times daily), followed by 5 days of lansoprazole and metronidazole at the same doses, and concluding with 5 days of lans…
