Investigators evaluated the risk for occult intra-abdominal injuries requiring acute intervention in children with blunt torso trauma and normal abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans (obtained at the discretion of the treating physician). Of 3819 such children (median age, 12 years) who presented to the 20 emergency departments (EDs) in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network over 3 years, 16 (0.4%) had intra-abdominal injuries, and 6 (0.2%) required acute intervention. The 10 patients who did not require acute intervention had pancreatic, mesenteric, liver, adrenal, and bladder injuries.
