Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) can lead to liver failure and the need for a transplant. PSC is also strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Post-transplant immunosuppressant therapy should, hypothetically, also improve IBD activity, but study results to date are inconsistent.
In the current longitudinal, multicenter study, investigators evaluated IBD activity in 218 patients with PSC both before and after liver transplantation. Data were obtained from the Nordic Liver Transplant Registry. IBD was diagnosed using standard criteria.
