Dengue, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, is thought to have affected almost 400 million people worldwide in 2010, with only a quarter of the cases being symptomatic. Symptoms — if they occur — usually include fever, headache, and joint, muscle, and eye pain, and abate in about a week. Repeated infection is often characterized by hemorrhage and increased severity.
