Patient safety research supports the use of checklists for high-complexity medical situations. Investigators at a California medical center developed a checklist for high-risk deliveries and trained neonatal staff in crew resource management — a technique that focuses on clear, concise, looped communications, coupled with leadership training. For each high-risk delivery, a “pre-brief” session was held for team members to notify the leader of potential problems and to conduct an equipment check. A “debrief” was conducted just after resuscitation.
