What role do persistent maladaptive connections between neuronal networks play in psychopathological states? Two research groups provide some insights.
A group in China analyzed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 24 inpatients and outpatients with untreated major depressive disorder (MDD) and 29 healthy controls. Imaging was repeated at 12 weeks in 16 patients whose symptoms remitted with antidepressant treatment (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score, ≤7).
