Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with morbidity and mortality in hospitalized adults. Investigators examined the epidemiology of AKI in a national pediatric database of >2.5 million hospitalized children (age, <18 years).
On the basis of discharge codes, AKI was identified in 10,322 children (3.9 cases/1000 admissions). AKI was more common in boys and in teens aged 15 to 18 years than other ages. Incidence was higher in blacks than in whites and lowest in Hispanic children. Hospital length of stay was significantly higher in children with AKI than in those without AKI (9 vs. 2 days).
