Although the incidences of central nervous system–related opportunistic infections and AIDS dementia have declined dramatically since the advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART), the proportion of HIV-infected patients who have experienced cerebrovascular events (CVEs) has remained high. In a recent study, researchers assessed the incidence and possible causes of CVEs (i.e., ischemic strokes, hemorrhagic strokes, or transient ischemic attacks) among more than 2500 HIV-infected adults (median age at study entry, 39; median CD4 count, 351 cells/mm3; 27% with HIV RNA <400 copies/mL; 46% on ART) who were receiving care in a large public hospital in North Carolina between 1999 and 2010.
