Inattentional blindness occurs when observers focused on one task miss another phenomenon right under their noses. In a classic experiment, most observers watching a basketball being passed among players failed to see a man in a gorilla suit walking on the court, a paradigm referred to as the “invisible gorilla” (you can see this on YouTube). To assess whether this phenomenon occurs in experienced clinicians, researchers studied 24 expert radiologists (9 from a prestigious university hospital and 15 expert examiners from the American Board of Radiology).
