Polycystic liver is seen in autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease and as an extra-renal manifestation in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Currently, surgical resection is the mainstay of therapy in patients with symptoms related to mechanical compression. To date, three randomized, placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that somatostatin analogues reduce cyst volumes, with treatment effects from –4.5% to –5.9% compared with placebo. However, these individual studies were too small to determine which subgroups might benefit the most.
