Salsalate, a prodrug of salicylate, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat patients with arthritis. Because this agent isn't acetylated, it doesn't alter platelet function. However, previous studies of salsalate suggested that it can lower blood glucose, although the mechanisms aren't understood. In this multisite U.S. trial, researchers randomized 286 adults with type 2 diabetes and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) concentrations of 7.0% to 9.5% to daily salsalate (3.5 g) or placebo.
