Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are diagnosed with HIV infection at disproportionately higher rates than MSM of other races or ethnicities in the U.S., and explanations for the high incidence in this group are lacking. In a feasibility study of an HIV prevention intervention conducted between 2009 and 2011 in six large U.S. cities, researchers estimated HIV incidence in 1164 sexually active black MSM who were HIV uninfected at baseline; follow-up lasted for 1 year. Intervention components included testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and referral for care; sexual partner referral; and peer assistance navigating the health system.
