In 2011, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented additional restrictions to residency duty hours intended to improve the educational experience as well as patient care. Researchers compared surveys of 151 pediatric program directors (PDs) with that of PDs from surgical and internal medicine.
Most pediatric PDs approved the individual aspects of the new regulations, but 72% disapproved of the 16-hour duty periods for postgraduate year 1 residents (PGY1). Compared with surgical and internal medicine PDs, pediatric PDs were more likely to approve of direct PGY1 supervision and a required 8 hours between shifts.
