The first study examining the burden of disease worldwide found that 5 of the top 10 causes of disability in 1990 were neuropsychiatric illnesses. This updated 2010 analysis covers 187 countries in 21 world regions, includes more psychiatric illnesses (anxiety and eating disorders, autism spectrum disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and expanded categories of bipolar illness), and employs an updated method to more validly link illnesses with disability.
