The profound effect of HIV infection on the immune function of the gut is believed to be one of the key factors underlying persistent immune activation and dysfunction despite highly suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART). Severe cases of HIV-induced gut dysfunction can manifest as HIV enteropathy (i.e., chronic gut symptoms — frequent loose stools — in HIV-infected individuals on ART, without an identifiable, reversible cause).
