Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) often leads to heart failure and the need for cardiac transplantation. To determine risk factors for HC in children, researchers evaluated data for 958 children diagnosed with HC from 1990 to 2009 in 98 U.S. centers.
Risk for death or transplantation at 2 years were as follows: 18% of 788 children with pure (isolated) HC, 41% of 69 with mixed HC with dilatation, and 41% of 58 with mixed HC and restrictive or other cardiomyopathy. Risk for death or transplantation was only 3% at 2 years for children with idiopathic disease diagnosed after age 1 year.
