Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) should undergo annual colonoscopic surveillance (NEJM Journal Watch Gastroenterol Sep 17 2013). These patients often undergo liver transplantation as their liver disease progresses, and those who do receive a transplant typically continue with annual surveillance colonoscopies post-transplantation. However, we do not know whether liver transplantation affects the progression of colonic neoplasia.
To address this issue, researchers retrospectively assessed the primary endpoint of progression of colonic neoplasia or persistence of low-grade dysplasia in 96 patients with PSC and UC — 33 of whom underwent liver transplantation and 63 of whom did not.
