The benefit of adjuvant epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors in resected non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is unknown. Now, investigators have conducted an industry-funded, phase III, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the EGFR antagonist gefitinib in patients with completely resected stage IB–IIIA NSCLC.
Patients were randomized to 2 years of adjuvant gefitinib (250 mg daily) or placebo and were stratified by stage, sex, histology, and use of adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy.
