Early gastric cancer (EGC) is common in some countries, including Japan. Although endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is considered the treatment of choice and boasts a 99% five-year survival rate, synchronous or metachronous cancers can occur in the remaining stomach. To determine the incidence of multiple gastric cancers, investigators retrospectively reviewed records of 1258 patients who underwent curative ESD for EGC in 1 of 12 Japanese hospitals during a period of >10 years.
