Patients who receive hemodialysis often have cardiovascular comorbidities for which antithrombotic agents are prescribed. However, such patients are at intrinsically high risk for bleeding, and benefits of antithrombotic therapy are less clear in this population than in patients without end-stage renal disease. Researchers used data from an international cohort study to examine outcomes associated with antithrombotic drug use in 38,000 patients who received chronic hemodialysis: 7% used oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) with or without antiplatelet drugs, 11% used nonaspirin antiplatelet agents (e.g., clopidogrel) with or without aspirin, 21% used aspirin alone, and 61% did not use antithrombotic agents.
